Getting our blood drawn...

Well. Yesterday- I survived getting my blood drawn a second time. I had to drink the fabulous orange drink- that tasted like orange soda, but made me feel a little high- I try so so hard to stay calm on the way to the doctors office, but i don't know what it is about 5 minutes before we get there my emotions get the best of me. I know it doesn't hurt- I had it done a few months ago and it didn't hurt at all!! ((I still think it doesn't hurt at all.. seriously- no pain.) I dont' know what it is, but I get so terrified and my body just like goes into breakdown mode. The poor nurse trying to take my blood pressure--as silent tears just pour down my face and im shaking-- the whole time thinking in my head that I am such a retard because it doesn't even hurt-- and she thinks I am nervous to get my blood pressure taken.. Sidenote- she had to take my blood pressure like 4 different times, then again like 15 minutes after I got my blood drawn because apparantly my blood pressure was Super high! haha... I just think I am so ridiculous- I really know I am- and Tyler is just so nice, and really even after we get into the dreaded little room, and I calm down enough to give the nurse my arm- I'm fine. It's like a big sigh of relief after that 10 seconds is over. Isn't it just retarted? I wish you all could understand-- I try so hard (and yes- I pray too mom!!) to just relax, and be calm, don't cry. But I still do. All for a dumb little needle prick and feeling light headed after. So frustrating- maybe by the end of this pregnancy I'll be over it. everyone seems to think I will be!

Then today--Tyler had to get his blood drawn. This cute little black man from Haiti comes to our house to to his 'physical' to get life insurance. The last thing he does of course is take Tyler's blood. Ty has told me in the past he hates it because he has only had it done one other time when he was like 9 years old and remembers feeling the blood leave his body, and told them to stop and made the doctor take the needle out of his arm- what a punk kid huh? Well I told him he was crazy and he would be fine- so the guy goes for prick #1- and all I can hear from the other room from the Haitian man is, "huh-- you must have rolling veins, i mean it was just there and now its gone" and the whole time in the other room im starting to feel sick just from listening to this, then sure enough, they try the other arm- prick #2- (by this time I have left to my bedroom because I am a bigger wuss than tyler and i am getting grossed out just listening to them talk)-- I eventually come back out and tyler is now laying on the couch- really dizzy, and has a bandaid on both arms- and still no tube filled!
He told me later that apparantly his blood comes out in spurts. Haha.. but really. He said he was watching my blood get drawn and it just smoothly fills up tube after tube like in a second- he said he was watching his and as soon as the guy would pump it, his blood would go like, spurt, wait-- then spurt, wait.. then one last final spurt, then would stop for good. Just enough to get the tube walls red, but not fill up one tube!
Tyler gave the guy permission to try again, but I guess they can only try 3 times total. He tried again and apparantly told tyler he was going to leave the thing in there for a while just to try and fill up the tube, but just as before, only 3 spurts, and then his blood just stops.
My favorite part of this whole experience is Tyler trying to imitate the Haitian guys accent and what he was saying. He sounds middle eastern- not french or creole! Ty said the guy just kept saying, "This never happens- Ive never seen this before- your veins are huge, I don't know what is happening!" " Sometimes I can't even see the veins on people, I just guess, but yours I can see!"
Oh- and Tyler claims he can feel the blood actually leaving his body. I definately could not feel that at all. Anyone else feel that? Creepy.
Basically-- someone else is coming next week to try again. Any advice- or explanations on why Tyler's blood is so weird? No one we have talked to has heard of this spurting thing- but we know he can't be alone!
Sorry for the long explanation- this blog has turned in to kind of a journal, and i can type alot faster than I can write, so sometimes I just keep typing. My apologies... But the blood thing- really weird and just quite hilarious. Better Tyler than me though- I can barely do one poke, let alone 3!!

  1. I have never heard of that blood spurty thing but I also hate having my blood drawn. Pretty much the same as you, super shaky lightheaded, cringing at every touch. Blah!! I had to get it done a couple weeks ago for my surgery and the lady had to poke me a few times to get it. I thought I was going to die... Or kill her. Not sure which.
Hate it hate it hate it.

  2. haha Carly I was laughing when I read this!! I'm sorry getting your blood drawn is so traumatizing... You're so funny though. And I can't believe Tyler has problems too...I guess married people really do become alike! I hope everything else is going well in the pregnancy! Next time I'm up I definitely want to see you!

  4. Carly, I totally understand the blood thing! I do a lot better now, but I had to get mine taken a lot when I was younger (they thought something was wrong with my heart, but it's like a horse :) Anyway, I have passed out NUMEROUS times. My mom always had to bring treats just so I could walk out of the office! Jon was a phlebotomist and swears he will draw my blood one day! They take a pint! Not going to happen! (Sorry that got long too)
